Like other muscles, your respiratory muscles can become fatigued when stressed during exercise. In a new study, researchers at Georgia’s Columbus State University had athletes use a handheld respiratory training device (powerlung.com). Most of the athletes showed improved endurance levels during short bursts of intense movement, reported the International Journal of Sports Medicine. Training those muscles (which include your diaphragm) may help you recover faster and breathe easier at your next race or game.
