We Malaysians love football – playing it, watching it and talking about it. But because finding a clean, safe, green padang isn’t always easy, we’ve flocked to futsal courts. The 5-a-side game allows us to enjoy The Beautiful Game even if it’s raining cats and dogs outside, if we can’t find 21 other buddies, or if our legs can’t carry us as far as they used to.

Although we highly encourage getting a good sweat session as often as you can via a friendly, fun round of futsal, we also think that you can always improve yourself as a futsal player. You don’t wanna be that guy who takes things too seriously, but then, if your skills are of the highest order, you don’t have to be. You’ll just let your feet – and your goals – do the talking.

So we asked Chiew Chun Yong, coach of the Malaysian National Futsal team, to show us five simple drills you and your teammates can do to elevate your game. Last year, he overviewed the Malaysian leg of the Neymar Jr.’s Five five-a-side tournament, where teams face each other for 10 minutes – but for every goal conceded, that team loses one player. The team with the most players at the end of the 10 minutes wins, or if their opponent loses all of its players.

The tournament is back this year, and you can catch all the fast-paced action during the Malaysia Finals at iM4U Sentral (in Puchong) at 10am on 20 May 2017. The team to win it all earns the right to represent Malaysia at the World Finals next month in Sao Paolo, Brazil. And you could fly there too, if you participate in and win the On Target Challenge. You’ll just have to be there to find out more.

In the meantime, here’s how to execute Coach Chiew’s five futsal drills that will make you world-class:

(You will need two friends to perform these drills: one to pass the ball, and another to be the defender. Perform each drill for 60 seconds, then rotate roles with your friends.)

1. Stop And Shield
A) Stand close to goal, with a defender an arm’s length away from you.

B) Sprint two steps towards goal, then sprint back towards the direction of the pass.

C) Stop the ball under your foot, stabilise yourself, and shield the ball from the defender for 3 seconds.

2. Drag Across
A) Stand close to goal, with a defender an arm’s length away from you.

B) Sprint two steps towards goal, then sprint back towards the direction of the pass.

C) Using the inside of your shoe, control the ball by dragging it across and away from the defender.

3. Stop And Push

A) Stand in the open court, with a defender about five steps away from you.

B) Sprint two steps forwards, then sprint back towards the direction of the pass.

C) Using the bottom of your shoe, control the ball and push it away from the defender and in front of you.

4. Drag Across
A) Stand in the open court, with a defender about five steps away from you.

B) Sprint two steps forwards, then sprint back towards the direction of the pass.

C) Using the inside of your shoe, control the ball by dragging it across and away from the defender.

5. Stop And Turn

A) Stand in the open court, with a defender about five steps away from you.

B) Sprint two steps forwards, then sprint back towards the direction of the pass.

C) Stop the ball using the bottom of one foot, then immediately turn around and dribble the ball forwards.
